The Most Active VCs In Ed Tech And Their Investments In One Infographic.

As the sector evolves, we rounded up the most active investors (not including accelerators) into one infographic and ranked them by investments into unique ed tech companies. Despite the slack in ed tech startup activity early in 2016, many VCs and CVCs have substantial ed tech portfolios, including a few investors that have funded 20+ unique ed tech startups since 2012.

Top investors in the space included:

First 3-D-Printed Superconducting Cavity.

The 3-D printing of metal parts promises to revolutionize a wide range of industries. Aircraft carriers, for example, might no longer need to carry spare parts for the myriad aircraft, engines, and weapons systems they carry. Instead, each part could be printed as needed.

The big worry of course is that the mechanical properties of 3-D printed parts might not match those of parts made in other ways, particularly when they are used as critical components, in high-performance jet engines for example.

To that end, materials scientists have spent much time and effort characterizing the mechanical properties of these parts. And consequently, they are now used as customized medical implants, jet engine bearings and for rapid prototyping in the car industry.

Microsoft Buys Into DNA Data Storage.

Bodies are fragile and prone to the eventual failure known as death. But the DNA that encodes all the instructions for creating and operating those perishable bodies? That stuff sticks around. Thanks to 7000-year-old DNA from a tooth found in a Spanish cave, for example, we know that the “caveman” who died there had blue eyes and was probably lactose intolerant.

Israeli car engine could halve fuel costs, emissions.

The notoriously conservative car business – autos, after all, are still largely powered by the internal combustion engine, developed nearly 150 years ago – is in for big changes, according to Gal Fridman, chief marketing officer and co-founder of Aquarius Engines.

“Our enhanced engine design uses energy much more efficiently, and eliminates the valves and rods that cause energy loss,” he said. “If a car equipped with a modern standard internal combustion engine can go about 600 kilometers on a tank of gas, ours can more than double that.”

From Star Wars to Real Life: New Prosthesis Transforms Lives.

Although Luke Skywalker makes only a cameo appearance in the latest Star Wars® film, his reappearance is also awakening interest in a prosthetic limb nicknamed for the fictional hero with a cybernetic hand. (Fans will recall that the bionic appendage replaced Luke’s right hand, which he lost in a lightsaber duel with Darth Vader in Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back*.)

Led by Ex-Suros Execs, Nico is Out To Change Brain Surgery.

Imagine that, heaven forbid, a blood vessel bursts inside your brain, spilling blood and causing pressure to build inside delicate tissues. You’ve just suffered the deadliest kind of stroke, what’s known as an intracerebral hemorrhage. You might think that surgeons would want to try to repair the damage as soon as you get to the hospital, but cutting into an already bleeding brain could cause even more damage. Instead, you’ll probably get sent to intensive care, where clinicians manage your blood pressure, keep you sedated, and hope for the best.
