Tesla Knows When a Crash Is Your Fault, and Other Carmakers Soon Will, Too.

Everyone makes mistakes, and many people try to cover them up. But if you try to hide an error made behind the wheel of a car made by Tesla Motors, you are liable to be caught out. In fact, trying to hide what really happened in any kind of car accident could soon become just about impossible.

Future of Fintech: 9 Trends In Fintech We’re Watching From AI To Chatbots To Blockchain.

Financial services incumbents along with early-stage startups and large tech companies are all competing in fintech. CB Insights CEO Anand Sanwal gave a 110-slide presentation at our fintech conference in New York. The full deck covered broad VC funding trends for fintech and the developments in large categories such as wealth management, blockchain, remittance tech, and insurance tech.

On robo-advisors, Sanwal noted that market volatility has not necessarily been a boon to the category.

“It’s not all roses,” he said. “There are headwinds … When market volatility picks up, people want to talk to an advisor.”

CrowdFlower raises $10 million from Microsoft and others to bring A.I. to data science.

CrowdFlower, a crowdsourced data-cleaning and tagging platform, has closed a fresh $10 million in funding in a round led by Microsoft Ventures, Canvas Ventures, and Trinity Ventures.

Founded out of San Francisco in 2009, CrowdFlower had previously raised $28 million, including a $12.5 million round back in 2014, but the company says it will use its cash influx to expedite the adoption of a new machine-learning product called CrowdFlower AI.

Helpshift raises $23 million to automate customer support with chatbots.

Helpshift has made it easy for companies to deal with millions of customer support engagements on mobile devices. Now the company has raised a $23 million venture funding round to fuel its in-app customer support for the masses. And one way it will do that is by creating chatbots that can help solve customer support questions automatically.

Is the biotech boom slowing down?

The cover of Ernst & Young’s 2016 biotech report has a picture of a parachutist and the subtitle, “Returning to Earth.” According to EY, the biotech industry has experienced explosive growth over the past few years, but that appears to have slowed in 2015. On its own, a 13 percent increase in biotech revenue looks impressive – unless it’s compared to the 18 percent increase in 2014.

So let’s take a few moments to dissect the report. Are biotechs descending, and if so, can we expect a soft landing?

There’s actually a lot of good news in the EY report. In addition to the 13 percent increase in revenue:

Germany’s Celonis raises $27.5M to help companies be more efficient through process mining.

Celonis, a big data analytics startup based in Germany, has raised $27.5 million from Accel and 83North to grow its product globally.

Founded out of Munich in 2011, Celonis has hitherto bootstrapped its way through its expansion into 25 countries and claims clients such as Siemens, KPMG, Deloitte, Bayer, and Vodafone, among others. Its core raison d’être is to help companies increase their efficiency by up to 30 percent using a process management technique known as process mining, or automated business process discovery. This involves mining data from event logs to identify key insights. Ultimately, it’s all about extracting knowledge that can reveal how a company is executing on its business processes.
