Do most great entrepreneurs focus on one idea or pursue many? A quick look at billionaire entrepreneurs reveals that most of them are serial entrepreneurs.
BuildZoom, the Y Combinator-backed service designed to connect homeowners with licensed contractors, is today announcing having closed on $1.4 million in seed funding, in a round led by Formation 8 (Joe Lonsdale). The company plans to use the additional funding for hiring and continued product development, with a specific focus on improving some of the site’s consumer-facing tools, like its online project gallery, Q&A section, and marketplace.
Smartphones have long since established themselves as the preferred camera for the majority of users, and even though there are now a number of ways to share their digital output, there’s still something fun about receiving photo prints by mail.
Startup accelerators have gone “niche” over the last year. Instead of simply copy and pasting the Y Combinator model ad nauseam, incubators have started to seep into verticals, tailoring their programs to particular industries.
Thumbtack, a marketplace for local service providers, has raised a $12.5 million Series B led by Sequoia Capital.
When co-founder and CEO Marco Zappacosta told me about the funding, he said he’s excited because Sequoia is “focused on building enduring, meaningful brands,” and it’s “making us their bet” in the local services market. Sequoia’s Bryan Schreier is joining Thumbtack’s board of directors, so I asked him via email why he picked Thumbtack.
Paris-based Internet of Things startup Netatmo, which makes personal weather station and air quality sensor devices (as seen in the video above) for use with Android and iOS apps, has just closed a €4.5 million ($5.8 million) funding round. It plans to use the funding to launch new connected devices in the second half of this year, including additional indoor air modules (to be announced this month), and also rain and wind meters.
Daqri, a company that says it’s creating the “Photoshop of augmented reality,” just announced that it has raised a $15 million Series A led by Tarsadia Investments.
