BlackEnergy crimeware coursing through US control systems,

Industrial control systems in the United States have been compromised by the BlackEnergy malware toolkit for at least three years in a campaign the US Computer Emergency Response Team has dubbed "ongoing" and sophisticated. Attackers had compromised unnamed industrial control system operators and implanted BlackEnergy on internet-facing human-machine interfaces including those from GE Cimplicity, Advantech/Broadwin WebAccess, and Siemens WinCC. The latter system was often used by large plant operators including Iran's Natanz uranium facility at the time it was hosed by Stuxnet, however the latest attacks targeting the platform are suspected but not confirmed.

One of the Best Business Opportunities in the Next Decade.

The real promise of the Internet of Things isn’t simply linking millions of devices together, just like the real innovation of the web wasn’t networking a bunch of computers. Instead, the true and still unrealized potential of IoT is to transform business models; it’s enabling companies to sell products in entirely new and better ways that benefit both the company and the customer.

Around the turn of the millennium, startups began using the web browser to deliver their products to consumers and companies. Soon afterwards, instead of paying a one-time fixed price to use the software, customers subscribed to access the software. You can’t buy Quicken or Quickbooks on a CD for one fixed payment anymore. Now it’s a subscription.

What the Rise of Industrial Internet Means for Cyber Security.

Security isn’t what it used to be. Thirty years ago, it was fence with a locked gate and a guard posted outside a data center. Today, it’s a multi-layered strategy encompassing people, processes, devices, sensors, machines, systems and networks.

As the world’s markets rapidly evolve into complex hybrids of physical and digital assets, cyber security is increasingly critical as a stabilizing force. It is no longer an esoteric art practiced mainly by rival intelligence agencies and giant corporations — it has become a basic necessity of everyday life for any business.

Corporate Cybersecurity Investments Increase 5x Since 2009.

Since 2010, corporate investors have participated in over 140 deals totaling $1.37B to cybersecurity companies. Notably, 2014 YTD has seen corporate investors participate in a higher number of large cybersecurity deals than in years past. Cybersecurity funding in 2014 YTD with corporate participation is already 29% higher than in all of 2013 and 129% larger than that of 2012. And there are still a couple of months remaining in the year.

A New Kind of Industrial Company: GE Eyes Growth by Linking Machines, People and Data.

Nobody wants to be late. But at a busy airline hub like Atlanta or Chicago, even a brief delay in aircraft arrival can result in missed connections and cascade into a major inconvenience. The Bureau of Transportation Statistics reported that this year alone, more than 750,000 flights operated by U.S. carriers arrived late and over 25 percent of flights were delayed by 15 minutes or more or cancelled. The estimated economic costs of these delays, both for airlines and for passengers, are in the billions.

Data Driving the Future of Clean Tech.

Clean tech may conjure images of electric vehicles and solar-powered homes, but it’s no longer just about stand-alone hardware technologies you can plug into the grid or drive on the road.

Clean tech is increasingly about IT-enabled distributed and fully integrated energy systems that have the potential to transform lives around the world — as well as the prosperity and productivity of countries across the globe.
