Nothing says summertime in Georgia like a dip in the old swimming hole. But near the town of Baxley, there’s one pool that’s not open to the public: the crystal-clear blue waters of the containment vessel bathing the Edwin Irby Hatch Power Plant’s nuclear reactor.
If everything goes according to plan, there will be 50 billion devices connected to the Internet by 2020, throwing off terabytes of data every day. This huge digital menagerie will include everything from consumer gadgets like Apple Watches and Nest thermostats to jet engines and entire power plants.
Alstom is to accept €300 million less than previously agreed for its power turbines unit from General Electric as a contribution to the US-based buyer's efforts to win antitrust clearance in Europe.
The last-minute 2.4% discount to the previously agreed €12.35 billion deal is the latest in a series of knocks Alstom shareholders have suffered since the deal was announced in April 2014.

People have been using ceramics for millennia, but the material’s practical applications have been mostly confined to the kitchen. “When you hit it, it fails catastrophically,” says Krishan Luthra, chief scientist for manufacturing and materials technologies at GE Global Research (GRC) in New York.
Krishna, however, thought that ceramics, which can withstand higher heat than even the most advanced alloys, could also be the perfect material for jet engines and other machines that burn fuel and must handle enormous temperatures. “I thought it would be the Holy Grail if we could get it inside machines, and get more power and savings out of our engines,” he says. “It could really make an impact.”
In 1894, California businessman Henry L. Williams drilled a pair of oil wells at the end of a pier sticking out 300 feet into the Pacific Ocean in Summerland, some 90 minutes up the coast from Los Angeles, and drew the first offshore oil.
Today there are tens of thousands of subsea wells around the world - some as deep as 9,000 feet below sea level and many miles from the coast - producing millions of barrels of oil. Keeping them working efficiently, especially now, when the oil margins are thin, is no small challenge. The industry estimates that operators lose as much as $3 million in revenue per week when a well goes out of commission.
General Electric (GE) ha llegado a un acuerdo con la filial europea de Sumitomo Mitsui (SMBC) para venderle su división europea Sponsor Finance por 2.200 millones de dólares (1.967 millones).

Imagine this scenario: A gunshot echoes down a city street at night. Passerby turn to look, but can’t make out the scene in the darkness. The first to react effectively is the nearest street lamp. It hears the gun and automatically goes to full brightness to illuminate the scene, film the attacker and call the emergency services – all in an instant.
Or how about medical emergencies? An intelligent lighting system could be a central part of the healthcare infrastructure, serving as network through which hospital managers receive updates in real time about a patient’s location and status. It could significantly improve the quality of medical care and speed up response time.
GE said today it would sell its U.S. Sponsor Finance business for approximately $12 billion to Canada Pension Plan Investment Board. The deal marks another big milestone on GE’s path to sell most of its banking businesses and return to industrials, a strategic shift the company announced in April.
“This announcement is the next step in GE’s transformation to a more focused industrial company,” said Keith Sherin, chairman and CEO of GE Capital. “The sale of Sponsor Finance aligns with our strategy to pair a smaller GE Capital with GE’s long-term industrial growth.”
