A new kind of window glass can selectively block visible sunlight as well as heat-producing invisible light.

Window glass that can tint on demand is pretty slick, but a new advancement has made it even cooler—and that could help the technology finally go mainstream.

Smart glass has been around for decades, but it is quite pricey and has found only niche applications, such as the windows of a new Boeing jetliner. But a new kind of electrochromic window glass, which changes color in response to the addition or removal of electronic charge, is more versatile than the technology now on the market, and it could be cheaper, too.

Solving the Energy Efficiency Quandary.

American industries have done a good job of becoming more efficient. According to a new report from the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy, the energy intensity of the U.S. economy (measured in BTUs consumed per dollar of GDP) has roughly halved since 1980. Energy use in the United States rose by 26 percent from 1980 to 2014, according to the group—a period when the U.S. GDP went up 149 percent.

Governments not planning properly for energy efficiency, report warns.

National governments are failing to plan properly for energy efficiency savings in their own buildings, according to new analysis by a group of businesses, local authorities, trade unions and civil society organisations.

The EU’s Energy Efficiency Directive requires EU member states to renovate 3% of the total floor area of central government buildings every year. The rule applies to buildings with a floor area of more than 500 m2 and do not meet minimum performance requirements.

Alternately, they must take different measures that lead to the same savings, such as deep renovation or changing the behaviour of staff.

EU introduces new rules to make cooking greener.

The sale of energy-wasting ovens and cooking hobs will be banned across the European Union after the latest set of rules to make household appliances more efficient takes effect on Friday, (20 February).

The European Commission said on Wednesday (18 February) that getting rid of inefficient appliances would cut consumer energy bills by around 50 euros ($57) per year, while the savings from the rules across the bloc would run into billions.

The policy, known as ecodesign, is intended to reduce fuel imports and CO2 emissions.

IBM adopts Israeli solution to save ‘lost’ electricity.

om a small start-up just a few weeks ago, Israel’s EGM (Electric Grid Management) is now part of a huge conglomerate – and its technology could help hundreds of millions of people in the US and around the world. A graduate of the IBM Alpha Zone Accelerator’s recently-completed first round, EGM is now part of IBM’s Insights Foundation for Energy solution, an electrical grid management and analytics program that will be offered to electricity utilities as part of IBM’s substantial infrastructure management business.

Buildings efficiency ‘absolutely central’ to 2030 climate package.

Unlocking the energy saving potential of the continent’s ageing building stock will be “absolutely central” to a key review of EU policy this summer, the EU’s top energy efficiency official has said.

But Paul Hodson, the head of the EU’s energy efficiency unit, flagged "micro" public action as the way forward, dampening hopes of major policy advances in the review which will stock-take progress towards meeting 2020 energy saving goals and mull 2030 objectives.

The paper will now be published in July, during the EU’s summer vacation period.
