Efficiency stagnation in global steel production urges joint supply- and demand-side mitigation efforts

Steel production is a difficult-to-mitigate sector that challenges climate mitigation commitments. Efforts for future decarbonization can benefit from understanding its progress to date. Here we report on greenhouse gas emissions from global steel production over the past century (1900-2015) by combining material flow analysis and life cycle assessment. We find that ~45 Gt steel was produced in this period leading to emissions of ~147 Gt CO2-eq.

Improving Through Employee Participation. The Case of a Spanish Food Manufacturer

Employee participation is considered a fundamental pillar to implement continuous improvement. Based on this consideration, this article presents an action research case study in a large food manufacturer where employee participation is implemented. The experience has a two-fold objective: improve performance of the production system and make the participative philosophy deep-rooted among workers.  The results show a remarkable improvement in the efficiency of manufacturing processes, as well as the consolidation of a participative philosophy.

La recuperación económica toma impulso

La recuperación coge fuerza en una parte importante de sectores, y así lo muestra un buen puñado de indicadores económicos. Las horas trabajadas en el segundo trimestre solo estuvieron un 1,4% por debajo del mismo trimestre de 2019, después de haberse llegado a hundir cerca de un 30%. Entre abril y mayo, el PIB creció un 2,8% y recobra dos tercios de lo que se había perdido con la paralización total de la actividad.

Suspendidos los ensayos en humanos de la más avanzada vacuna española contra la covid

La noticia de la suspensión supone un jarro de agua fría para las aspiraciones de la vacuna española, denominada MVA-COVID-19(S). Este aplazamiento llega después de que el Ministerio de Ciencia anunciara en enero que esta candidata, la más adelantada de las opciones españolas, había mostrado “una eficacia del 100%” en sus primeras pruebas en animales, tras un ensayo con 22 ratones modificados genéticamente para ser susceptibles al coronavirus.
