When Alexander the Great invaded India, its kings sent him a peace offering not of gold or silver, but of the country’s steel, highly prized for making weapons.
Another quarter of record solar deployments is in the books. Deployments reached 5.7 gigawatts (GWdc) of installed capacity across all market segments in Q2 2021 – the largest Q2 on record. Installations in Q2 brought the 2021 total to nearly 11 GWdc through the first half of the year. But this hardly tells the full story. In Q2, it became more apparent how continued supply chain constraints and trade action headwinds are negatively impacting the US solar industry.

On a recent afternoon, the Rue de Rivoli looked like this: Cyclists blowing through red lights in two directions. Delivery bike riders fixating on their cellphones. Electric scooters careening across lanes. Jaywalkers and nervous pedestrians scrambling as if in a video game.
Sarah Famery, a 20-year resident of the Marais neighborhood, braced for the tumult. She looked left, then right, then left and right again before venturing into a crosswalk, only to break into a rant-laden sprint as two cyclists came within inches of grazing her.
There is interest in the sheet metal industry on how to adopt Industry 4.0 into their legacy forming practices to significantly improve productivity and product quality. Figure 1 illustrates four important variables influencing part quality: material properties, die friction response, elastic deflection of the tool, and press dynamic characteristics. These variables are usually difficult to measure or track during the production runs.
Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a methodology that considers a product’s entire life cycle, from raw material and production (manufacturing phase) through its useful life (use phase) to the end-of-life disposal or recycling (end-of-life phase). It also takes into account the full life cycle of its energy sources.
The severity of the global chip shortage has gone up a notch over the last few weeks and it’s now looking as though millions of people will be impacted.
As technology has advanced, semiconductor chips have spread from computers and cars to toothbrushes and tumble dryers — they now lurk beneath the hood of a surprising number of products.
But demand for chips is continuing to outstrip supply, and car makers are no longer the only companies feeling the pinch.
