Can COVID vaccines shed spike proteins – and is that bad?

What is a spike protein?

A spike protein is a tool that helps a virus to enter the cell.

If you look at an illustration of SARS-CoV-2, you will notice all the protruding structures on its extremities. The main job of these spike proteins is to join to receptors – called ACE2 receptors – on the surface of a cell and force the viral genome inside.

Preston council: English city hopes recovery fortunes lie in Spanish model

"At school I don't think you learn about it a lot," says 23-year-old apprentice bricklayer Lewis Maloney.

"They just push you to go to college, they don't tell you about apprenticeships or other options like that."

Lewis is working on a housing development site about four miles outside of Preston city centre.

While you might find apprentices working in construction across the country, in Preston, something a bit different is happening.

Rosenbauer introduces extinguishing system for emergency responders for EV battery fires

With the increase in battery-powered electric vehicles (BEVs, HEVs and PHEVs) on the road, statistically the risk potential for an accident or technical defect of the inherently safe battery systems also increases. However, for the most part, emergency crews do not have appropriate equipment and/or techniques to counter these fires, the response to which entails many unknown factors.

Yara to start operating the world’s first battery-electric container ship, prepared for autonomous operation

Yara Birkeland —the world’s first battery- electric container ship, prepared for autonomous operation—has departed for its maiden voyage in the Oslo fjord. The autonomous ship will sail within 12 nautical miles from the coast, between 3 ports in southern Norway.

We are proud to be able to showcase the world’s first fully electric and self-propelled container ship. It will cut 1,000 tonnes of CO2 and replace 40,000 trips by diesel-powered trucks a year.

German ESS manufacturer Tesvolt raises US$45m for international expansion and innovation

Energy storage technology company Tesvolt has concluded a funding round, raising around €40 million (US$45.25 million) in equity capital.

Germany-headquartered Tesvolt assembles energy storage systems (ESS) for a variety of commercial and industrial (C&I) markets, using third party-supplied prismatic nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) lithium-ion battery cells.

It has received orders worth close to €100 million for this year so far, the company claimed, and it opened a factory in Wittenberg, Germany, with 255MWh annual production capacity in April 2020.

How ultracold, superdense atoms become invisible

A new study confirms that as atoms are chilled and squeezed to extremes, their ability to scatter light is suppressed.

An atom’s electrons are arranged in energy shells. Like concertgoers in an arena, each electron occupies a single chair and cannot drop to a lower tier if all its chairs are occupied. This fundamental property of atomic physics is known as the Pauli exclusion principle, and it explains the shell structure of atoms, the diversity of the periodic table of elements, and the stability of the material universe.

Global solar installations to grow 20% in 2022

Global solar photovoltaic (PV) installations will see over 20% growth in 2022 and surpass the 200GW (DC) barrier for the first time, at a total investment of at least $170bn, according to a new report.

IHS Markit’s study predicts solar PV installations to experience double-digit growth in 2021.

Continued growth through 2022 would mark the second year in a row to experience double-digit growth of global installations in a high-price environment, the report highlighted.
