Future Tesla Cars Will Use Batteries for Shell Structure

Battery packs in current Teslas are mounted in the floor of the cars, but they're not structural parts of the chassis. That could eventually change. At its "Battery Day" event today, Tesla detailed its plans to halve the cost per kilowatt-hour of its batteries. To help achieve that goal, the automaker is rethinking how it builds cars in the future.

Continental has a plan to let drivers look around corners

A new product designed by German supplier Continental could give vehicles and their drivers several additional sets of eyes.

Continental says its Collective Perception system allows vehicles to bring together image data from other vehicles and from sensors in roads and buildings to improve a driver’s field of sight.

For example, by using images from other vehicles or nearby traffic cameras, the system would allow a driver at a city intersection to see around the corner of a building that a bicyclist is coming their way.

Warning: Objects In Driverless Car Sensors May Be Closer Than They Appear

Researchers at Duke University have demonstrated the first attack strategy that can fool industry-standard autonomous vehicle sensors into believing nearby objects are closer (or further) than they appear without being detected.

The research suggests that adding optical 3D capabilities or the ability to share data with nearby cars may be necessary to fully protect autonomous cars from attacks.
