New Map of Meaning in the Brain Changes Ideas About Memory

Researchers have mapped hundreds of semantic categories to the tiny bits of the cortex that represent them in our thoughts and perceptions. What they discovered might change our view of memory.

In 2016, neuroscientists mapped how pea-size regions of the cortex respond to hundreds of semantic concepts. They’re now building on that work to understand the relationship between visual, linguistic and memory representations in the brain.

Exasun has received funding of €9 million

Exasun has received funding of €9 million to build a completely new PV assembly line and to scale up internationally. The investment comes from @ABN AMRO Sustainable Impact Fund, @Invest-NL, @Wienerberger and existing shareholders @ENERGIIQ, @Dockpoint and @No Such Ventures.

An exotic interplay of electrons

Water that simply will not freeze, no matter how cold it gets -- a research group involving the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) has discovered a quantum state that could be described in this way. Experts from the Institute of Solid State Physics at the University of Tokyo in Japan, Johns Hopkins University in the United States, and the Max Planck Institute for the Physics of Complex Systems (MPI-PKS) in Dresden, Germany, managed to cool a special material to near absolute zero temperature.

Hubble detects ghostly glow surrounding our solar system

Imagine walking into a room at night, turning out all the lights and closing the shades. Yet an eerie glow comes from the walls, ceiling, and floor. The faint light is barely enough to see your hands before your face, but it persists. Sounds like a scene out of "Ghost Hunters?" No, for astronomers this is the real deal. But looking for something that's close to nothing is not easy.

Pulses driven by artificial intelligence tame quantum systems

It's easy to control the trajectory of a basketball: all we have to do is apply mechanical force coupled with human skill. But controlling the movement of quantum systems such as atoms and electrons is much more challenging, as these minuscule scraps of matter often fall prey to perturbations that knock them off their path in unpredictable ways. Movement within the system degrades -- a process called damping -- and noise from environmental effects such as temperature also disturbs its trajectory.

Pharma putting its money where its mouth is on climate sustainability, but barriers remain

Pharma companies are making commitments to environmental sustainability, yet practical barriers are making it hard to deliver on that commitment.

That’s according to a recent report out from global consulting firm Oliver Wyman that identified ways in which pharma companies can start to implement changes now that will have a large impact on the climate in years to come.
