Germany registered 780 MW of new solar in January

Germany’s Federal Network Agency (Bundesnetzagentur) has reported that 780 MW of new PV capacity was installed in January, from 420 MW of solar in January 2022.

The main market driver remains PV systems up to 300 kW in size, supported under the country's feed-in tariff (FIT) scheme. Developers installed about 526.5 MW of such systems last year.

Second-life EV batteries as grid-scale storage

As of 2021, global sales of electric vehicles had reached 16 million units, underscoring accelerating demand, said the International Energy Agency. The transportation energy transition has only just begun.

Most batteries retired from EVs still have about 70% of their capacity remaining, said San Diego-based startup Smartville, noting that this makes them an ideal candidate for second-life use. This is the opportunity that Smartville aims to seize, by repurposing EV batteries as grid-scale energy storage to store renewable energy.

Meyer Burger announced its plans to switch all its high-performance solar modules to a glass-glass design to increase production speed and prevent slowdowns due to product shortages.

The Board of Directors approved the update to introduce a unified product platform for Meyer Burger solar panels. The panels will continue to come in black and white versions, have bifaciality and low weight. Meyer Burger says it is laying the foundation to achieve premium prices for its high-performance modules in the long term.
