Microbes could help reduce the need for chemical fertilizers

Production of chemical fertilizers accounts for about 1.5 percent of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions. MIT chemists hope to help reduce that carbon footprint by replacing some chemical fertilizer with a more sustainable source — bacteria.

Bacteria that can convert nitrogen gas to ammonia could not only provide nutrients that plants need, but also help regenerate soil and protect plants from pests. However, these bacteria are sensitive to heat and humidity, so it’s difficult to scale up their manufacture and ship them to farms.

German biopharmaceutical firm partners with Chinese high-tech company to research lung disease

German biopharmaceutical company Boehringer Ingelheim's China arm has inked a strategic cooperation agreement with Chinese high-tech company ChromX Health, to jointly push forward research on interstitial lung diseases and search for innovative early diagnosis and intervention solutions.

Interstitial lung diseases, or ILD, are a large group of disorders that can cause progressive scarring of lung tissue if not treated timely and effectively, resulting in difficulty to breathe and even death.

Second-most distant galaxy discovered using James Webb Space Telescope

The second- and fourth-most distant galaxies ever observed have been discovered in a region of space known as Pandora's Cluster, or Abell 2744, using data from NASA's James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). Following up on a deep field image of the area, an international team led by Penn State researchers confirmed the distance of these ancient galaxies and inferred their properties using new spectroscopic data -- information about light emitted across the electromagnetic spectrum -- from JWST.

Germany Cannot Shift Covid Funds to Climate Projects, Court Rules

Germany’s highest court ruled on Wednesday that the government’s plan to repurpose tens of billions of euros from a pandemic fund to help finance environmental projects violated the nation’s Constitution. The decision threatens to rip a hole in the country’s budget and complicate its transition to a greener economy.

The ruling means that the government of Chancellor Olaf Scholz cannot shift 60 billion euros, about $64.6 billion, earmarked for tackling the Covid-19 pandemic into a special fund aimed at helping Germany meet ambitious goals to reduce carbon emissions.
