Desjardins CEO expects 6-7 months of economic challenges

The CEO of financial services co-operative Desjardins Group is bracing for months of economic turmoil ahead. 

“The next six to seven months in front of us will be quite a challenge,” Guy Cormier told BNN Bloomberg in a Tuesday interview.

Cormier said he’s unsure if there is a significant downturn, a “soft landing” or a slowdown ahead for Canada’s economy, but he anticipates people and businesses will feel the economic pinch regardless.

Focus on Value Creation: Continental Presents Strategy to Achieve Mid-term Targets

At today’s Capital Market Day in Hanover, Continental announced its strategy for increasing value creation. To achieve its mid-term targets, the company will adopt a package of cost-reduction measures. It thus aims to achieve a consolidated adjusted EBIT margin of around 8 to 11 percent in the next two to three years and then improve within this range. The company has also sharpened its sales expectations. In the short term (two to three years), Continental aims to achieve total sales of around €44 billion to €48 billion.

Telefónica comunica que el ERE incluirá un máximo de 5.100 despidos, el 32% de la plantilla

La dirección de Telefónica España ha cifrado el número de excedente de puestos de trabajo en torno a los 5.124 empleos entre las tres sociedades que incluirá en su Expediente de Regulación de Empleo (ERE). Sin embargo, la empresa prevé que el número final de bajas incluidas en el expediente -que aún no ha hecho pública- se inferior ya que además prevé reducir este exceso de plantilla mediante recualificación (upskilling y/o reskilling), cambios de actividad e internacionalizaciones.

Cop28 president says there is ‘no science’ behind demands for phase-out of fossil fuels

The president of Cop28, Sultan Al Jaber, has claimed there is “no science” indicating that a phase-out of fossil fuels is needed to restrict global heating to 1.5C, the Guardian and the Centre for Climate Reporting can reveal.

Al Jaber also said a phase-out of fossil fuels would not allow sustainable development “unless you want to take the world back into caves”.
