UAW strikes tentative deal with auto parts maker Allison Transmission

The UAW has reached agreement with auto parts maker Allison Transmission Holdings Inc on a tentative deal covering 1,500 workers in Indianapolis, the labor group said on Friday.

The four-year contract guarantees a starting wage of $20 an hour for UAW employees and retroactive pay hikes until Nov. 15 last year, and two categories of bonus that amount to $7,000, the union said.

EU Sanctions Russia's Largest Diamond Producer Alrosa

The European Union on Wednesday imposed sanctions on Russia's state-run diamond giant Alrosa and its CEO as part of a ban on imports of the precious stones over the Ukraine war.

The EU in December agreed to prohibit diamonds exported from Russia as it tightens sanctions to further sap the Kremlin's coffers.

Hyundai Sells St. Petersburg Auto Plant

South Korean automaker Hyundai announced it will sell its St. Petersburg plant, which suspended operation in March 2022 amid an exodus of foreign companies from Russia.

“Hyundai Motor Company (Hyundai) today held a Board of Directors meeting, approving a plan to sell its entire stake in Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Rus (HMMR LLC) to Art-Finance LLC,” the company said in a press release.

"Hyundai is currently making final arrangements with Art-Finance for details of the deal," it added.

Why LEDs haven't yet cut energy use for lighting

If you want to sell a bicycle, light it up, says Eamon Barrett, owner of the Altitude bike shop in Waterford, Ireland. The glossy technicolour paints, the chrome, the shiny new spokes - they all glisten in bright light.
